History of Dunearn Road/ Bukit Timah

Bukit Timah is located in the Central Region of Singapore. Its name is derived from the Temak tree that grew in the area and Bukit originated from a Maly name for the hill. Bukit Timah consists of 8 sub-zones. It is the country’s main rainforest reserve and home to the highest hill.

Bukit Timah Road is the highway running from the CBD to Johor Bahru via Woodlands Road. The 25 km road is one of the main roads in the island. It passes through Bukit Timah, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Farrer Road, Newton Road and Little India.

Bukit Timah divides into two roads, Dunearn Road and Newton Circus. Dunearn Road runs from the junction of Jalan Anak Bukit and Clementi Road. The road was constructed around 1841 and got its name from Dunearn House which was located in the area.

A canal separates Bukit Timah Road and Dunearn Road. The roads link the neighbourhood to prominent places in Singapore. It splits to form the Farrer flyover and Dunearn underpass near Adam Road. On the other end, next to Newton Road,  Dunearn road divides into two. One part joins Bukit Timah Road and the other one ends at Newton Road.

Tall trees line along Dunearn Road giving the surrounding its lush greenery. There are many schools located close to the road. Residential units are also around the road providing residents with easy access.

The Singapore Turf Club was situated on Dunearn Road before it was relocated to Karnji in 1999. At the meeting point of Gilstead Road and Dunearn Road is The Home Nursing Foundation that was constructed in 1966. It was originally used as the Singapore Family Planning Centre. It was later occupied by the World Health Organization.

There are many schools close to Dunearn Road. They include The Chinese High School, Singapore Chinese Girls School, Anglo-Chinese School, and Hwa Chong Junior College. Where Nanyang Girls’  High School sits today was originally occupied by Nanyang Primary School and the National Junior College until 1995.

The Dunearn Road area has plenty of attractive sites. Singapore Botanic Gardens, recognized by UNESCO World Heritage as the only tropical garden, is nearby. The garden founded about 160 years ago is incredible.

There are many religious and commercial buildings located close to Dunearn Road. It is an area rich in history. Today, it has several amenities and facilities to offer. Residents can enjoy shopping in the nearby malls such as Ion Orchard.
